• The kata will be judged on a points basis.
• A knockout system (single elimination) will be used. After the first round, the top 16/8/4 will
remain. The number of rounds required to reach a final of 4 participants will then be
determined based on the size of the pool. This will be shared with the coaches at the start of
the tournament, which will also determine how many kata the participant must perform. This
can be 2 or more.
• If someone has a rank for which there is no category for his or her age, this participant will join
the corresponding category of the next age group.
Provisions
General
During the Hokori No Kata Taikai tournament, each kata will be judged on execution, appearance,
execution of techniques, power, timing, rhythm, speed, balance, focus, breathing, and posture.
For all matters not covered by these competition rules, the IFK rules will be followed.
Competition procedure
Repeating Katas
In all categories, a kata may not be repeated. The participant must perform a different kata each
round. Performing a kata twice will result in disqualification. The participant will be eliminated from
the results and will not be eligible for an award.
Restarting katas
We distinguish between three categories for restarting Katas:
1. Youth participants with a grade lower than 2nd Kyu
Youth participants with a grade lower than 2nd Kyu may restart their kata once if they make a mistake
while performing their kata. This is only possible if the participant requests a restart before the last
technique of their kata. A kata that has been completed cannot be redone. No points will be deducted
when restarting a kata in this category.2. Adult participants with a grade lower than 2nd Kyu
Adult participants with a grade lower than 2nd Kyu may restart their kata once if they make a mistake
while performing their kata. This is only possible if the participant requests a restart before the last
technique of their kata. A kata that has run out of time cannot be redone. When restarting a Kata in
this category, each referee will deduct 0.1 points.
3. Participants with a rank higher than or equal to 2nd Kyu
Participants with a rank higher than or equal to 2nd Kyu cannot restart their Kata.
Scores and resolving ties
Each competitor receives 5 scores from the five-member jury. The highest and lowest scores are
always discarded, so only the three middle scores count in the main ranking. In the event of a tie, the
discarded scores from the most recent round are considered. The discarded lowest score is counted
first, and if this is not decisive, the discarded highest score is then used as the deciding factor. If this
occurs during the second round or the final and the tie has not yet been resolved, the same procedure
is applied to the discarded scores from the previous rounds, and this procedure continues until the tie
is resolved. If a tie is not resolved by taking the discarded points into account, both competitors will
perform the same prescribed kata, drawn by the head judges, and the jury will announce a winner by
waving flags.
Clothing
All participants are expected to participate in a clean, white karate gi. Girls and women wear a white T-
shirt or white shirt under their karate gi. The sleeves of these may not be longer than those of their
karate gi. Back numbers on the karate gi, other than those issued by the organization of the Hokori No
Kata Taikai tournament, are not permitted. Each participant wears the obi of his or her grade. In case
of doubt, this will be checked by means of the passport. Wearing jewelry is not permitted, If these
cannot be removed, they must be covered. If the participant fails to do so, each judge will deduct 0.2
point from their score.
